Google Voice

October 16th, 2009 admin No comments

While waiting for my Google Wave invite to arrive I completely forgot I applied for a Google Voice account.  As of last night I received my Google Voice invite.  Huzzah!  And honestly I did this on a whim one night.   GV sounded interesting but I signed up because, like the good tech. nerd that I am, I love shiny toys.  Or, in this case, shiny new apps.

A few hours with the program and I’m in love.  Yes, I still believe Google is going to take over the world and they have their fingers in too many people’s lives but if they keep releasing these sweet apps. it’s hard not to sell off my soul piece by piece.

For a spot of amusement read the invite request (begging) thread. You gotta give Google credit, they really know how to drum up interest.  I’m glad I no longer have the burning desire to be the first owner of something.  Can you imagine paying for an invite?  Sad.

X Doesn’t Always Mark the Spot

You gotta love all the antics following the trial of ‘The Pirate Bay’ admins.  If you’ve not been reading about the case the most recent “revelation” is that TPB is supposedly owned by a shadowy off shore corperation in the Seychelles.  After reading the Ars article I had the urge to read user comments.  Ars has, in the past, had a decent signal to noise ration with regards to its user base.  I had assumed most users would find the arguments of TPB admins amusing but empty.  I was wrong.  My favorite comment:

What I think most people don’t realize, is that by Neij and his buds not owning the company (that they are just employees running the website for Reservella) only the owners of Reservella are the ones culpable for the crime of copyright infringement.  – Staticstarter

I love “in the know” commenters.  Apparently  we’re all amazing lawyers well versed in criminal law.  And what an astute observation from what I can only assume is the most unique genius ever to grace the net.  What a knob.  This logic is pretty endemic to all the commenters.  Amusing more so for the fact that no one is saying the owners of this fictitious Reservella company aren’t culpable, they’re saying  TBP’s admins ARE the owners.

The other posts seem to imply or outright state the this is just like the RIAA going after “the little guy.”  Oh please.  TBP admins are as far from being victims as you can be.  They ran a fucking tracker.  Look I don’t give a shit if people pirate content, if they have the know-how then great.  But don’t sit around claiming you’re doing it for some greater purpose.  Stop spouting garbage from some sesquipedalian manifesto and just admit you steal.  And clearly you do since you plagiarize the words of others in the hopes of sounding unique and intelligent.  When I have kids I hope to instill one belief in them, you aren’t as special as you think.  :)   My wife will hit me for that but I’d rather have kids that work hard to stand out than ones who assume it’s a birthright.

TBP knew what it was doing and clearly they knew it wasn’t really legit.  Ok.  And they probably made money off of it, I wouldn’t doubt it.  More power to em’.

*Our table “numbers”, awesome.

I’m MARRIED!!!!!!!!!

I’m struggling to think of a profound way of describing my feelings but I’m coming up blank. Lets just say I’m shocked that I went from quietly building Mt. Dew pyramids by myself to being in a loving relationship with a ridiculously hot Korean woman. Seriously, when does Ashton Kutcher jump out to tell me I’ve been punk’d? My friends always said I’d end up marrying an Asian woman, I should have trusted them.

The Wedding went extremely well. We had some problems with the DJ and florist and a couple of other minor glitches but not too bad considering we did most of it ourselves. I do want to apologize to our friends and family that had to stand for the ceremony. We forgot to include a small bit in the ceremony speech letting people know they could sit. If I hadn’t been so enamored with my wife I might have noticed. But if you could have seen how beautiful she was at the ceremony…. you’d understand.

Thank you all,
Mr. and Mrs Dakota
